From idea to shelf
Premium presence, protected freshness.
Coffee is a sensory product — buyers judge quality before they ever taste a single cup. For emerging coffee brands, packaging is often the deciding factor between a sale and a scroll-past.
That is exactly the challenge one specialty coffee roastery brought to XINHE: packaging that felt premium, protected the beans’ freshness, and told a sustainability story its customers actually cared about.
This case study follows how XINHE’s paper tube packaging solved that problem, from initial concept to finished product on retail shelves.
01 · The challenge
Outgrowing the ordinary pouch.
The original stand-up pouch was functional, but it did not reflect the quality of the beans inside or give the brand a distinctive shelf presence next to competitors.
- A rigid, premium-feeling container that stands out on retail shelves
- Full customization of size, printing, and finish to match brand identity
- Proper freshness protection for whole-bean and ground coffee
- Eco-friendly materials aligned with the brand’s sustainability story
- A manufacturing partner able to move fast — samples within days, not weeks
02 · The solution
A custom tube, engineered as a complete system.
XINHE proposed a kraft paper tube canister with a resealable aluminum-lined lid — a format increasingly used for specialty coffee, tea, and other premium consumables.
Structure & protection
The tube body uses multi-layer spiral-wound paperboard for rigidity, paired with an inner foil or PE barrier layer to protect against moisture, light, and oxygen — the three main enemies of coffee freshness. A metal or paper composite lid with a reusable seal keeps beans fresh after opening.
Branding & print quality
High-resolution offset printing was applied directly to the tube body, with spot UV on the logo and matte lamination across the base color. The result is a tactile, premium unboxing experience designed to photograph well for Instagram and TikTok content.
Sustainability
The paper tube is FSC-certified, fully recyclable, and uses soy-based inks. For customers actively looking for low-waste packaging, this created a meaningful point of difference versus plastic pouches or rigid tins.
Size flexibility
Three SKU sizes — 100g, 250g, and 500g — were produced using the same tooling and print setup, helping keep unit costs manageable even at moderate order volumes.
03 · The process
A clear path from brief to launch.
-
Consultation
We reviewed the brand’s existing packaging, target price point, and order volume to recommend the right tube diameter, wall thickness, and lid type.
-
Design & sampling
Our team turned around a physical printed sample within one week, allowing the client to check color accuracy, print sharpness, and how the tube felt in hand — details that are hard to judge from a digital mockup.
-
Revisions
Two rounds of adjustments refined the Pantone color match and changed the lid finish from glossy to matte to reduce fingerprint marks.
-
Production & QC
Once approved, the project moved into full production with in-line quality checks for seal integrity, print alignment, and tube roundness.
-
Delivery
Finished tubes were packed and shipped to meet the brand’s product launch timeline.
04 · The results
Packaging that performed beyond the shelf.
Shelf standout
Retail partners reported the new packaging drew noticeably more attention than the brand’s previous pouches.
Reduced freshness complaints
The improved barrier lining cut down on customer complaints about stale beans.
Stronger brand storytelling
The sustainability angle became a key marketing talking point, supported by real certification rather than vague “eco-friendly” claims.
Manageable unit economics
Standardizing tooling across three SKU sizes kept packaging costs proportional to order volume instead of adding a premium for small-batch custom runs.
05 · Why paper tubes work
The space between a basic pouch and an expensive tin.
Paper tube packaging solves a recurring challenge for coffee brands scaling from local roasters to online or retail distribution. It bridges the gap between a cheap-looking pouch and an expensive rigid tin, while offering a sustainability story that resonates with today’s coffee consumers. For brands selling through Amazon, Shopify, or specialty retail, the unboxing experience itself has become part of the product.
